Logansport loses two of its best

Two of Logansport’s best died within days of each other. Two men who have had a profound impact on every baseball player who has donned the Berries baseball uniform. It doesn’t matter what era you were playing; you knew these two men because they were always there. Coach Jim Turner Sr. and Coach Butch Jones will be sadly missed by the community, former Logansport baseball players and their families. Let us not forget how these men behaved until their last breath. And that with grace and humility.

I fondly remember hopping in the back of daddy’s van (when it wasn’t frowned upon) and going to The Shirt Shack to see Butch and grab some new minor league uniforms or hats. that he had made. He always greeted you with a smile and treated you like family. I never had the pleasure of playing for Coach Turner or Coach Jones, but they were always there and gave you something to work on or think about. Looking back, some of their lessons are still with the many men who played baseball for them. It’s an impact that only great coaches can have.

I spent countless hours with Old Coach Turner (OCT for short) and his family, mainly that big blue pickup truck he had always had, which then morphed into the burgundy minivan you always looked for when riding. ‘a baseball game. You have read and heard the stories. He was more than a trainer to many. I was lucky to have him with Muriel, his beloved wife, as the third group of grandparents. Affectionately known as Grandma and Grandpa Turner in House Ness, they were never far from us and always came to a birthday, graduation party, Christmas party, or a trip to Rax for a delicious roast beef sandwich.

To the families of Butch Jones and Jim Turner, we mourn the loss of these beloved men with you. But we also have so many wonderful memories that the two left behind countless baseball players. May Coach Turner and Coach Jones rest in peace. They returned home in the third base in the sky canoe, to which they rightfully belong. You will be remembered and missed by all.
