HONOLULU – A new program to help eligible people with disabilities save money without compromising their federal or state disability benefits has been launched in the state.
The Hawaiʻi Achieving a Better Life Experience (ABLE) savings program accounts are established by the federal government and managed at the state level.
“I encourage all residents of Hawaii with an eligible disability to open a Hawai’i ABLE savings account,” Governor David Ige said in a statement on Monday. âABLE provides the tools to achieve financial empowerment and help them prepare for a more independent and secure future, through a simple and intuitive online savings opportunity. “
In 2019, Ige signed Kal’s Law, which allows people with disabilities to work full-time at minimum wage without losing state or federal benefits. This year, Governor Ige signed a bill that became Law 55, which removes the practice of paying individuals less than the minimum wage based solely on whether the person has a disability.
âFor too long, people with disabilities have not been able to save for the future for fear of losing the government benefits they need. The disability community fought long and hard to change this, and together we found a solution, âsaid Daintry Bartoldus, executive administrator of the Hawaii State Council for Developmental Disabilities.
Hawaiʻi ABLE is proud to be part of the ABLE Collaboration and the ABLE for ALL Savings Plan, a national ABLE savings plan administered by the State of Oregon.
âWe are delighted that HawaiÊ»i is joining the ABLE collaboration. We bring together like-minded states to provide these unique savings opportunities for people with disabilities. They deserve the opportunity to save for their future, âsaid David Bell, deputy director of the Oregon Treasury Savings Network.
To ensure savers have access to reliable services and ADA compliant features, the ABLE for ALL Savings Plan is partnered with Sumday Administration LLC, as a member of the program plan manager. Sumday’s intuitive online platform is easy to use and helps people manage their ABLE accounts to make their dreams come true.
