Madurai MP Su Venkatesan shared the letter he received from the Director General of Posts, Tamil Nadu Circle, B Selvakumar on Twitter and wrote “Hindi imposition has been avoided”.
He said more than 40,000 forms used in 14,000 state post offices will be available in Tamil and English within a month.
âAppropriate instructions have been given to the relevant offices to obtain all forms related to customers at the post offices, viz. PO savings plans, mandates, etc. printed in Tamil and English (bilingual) and immediately distributed to all post offices in the Tamil Nadu circle, âthe letter B Selvakumar written to MP Venkatesan reads.
On October 5, Venkatesan, on Twitter, shared a letter he wrote to the Postmaster General in which he noted that the forms for the postal savings plans were only in English and Hindi, not Tamil. Commoners in Tamil Nadu found it difficult to complete these forms, he said. Stating that India has multilingual diversity, he said government departments should be aware of this fact.
He said warrant forms were available in Tamil before, but were removed with the introduction of digital forms. He added that payment slips and withdrawal slips for deposit accounts were also not available in Tamil.
âEven large private companies, although for commercial purposes, offer the possibility of conversing and communicating in regional languages. But a government entity, which must function like blood vessels to connect man to society, does not. How will this attitude be characterized as indifference, bias or imposition? He had asked.
He further stated that the central government department should use the regional language in states that do not speak Hindi.
