DURBAN – Two UCT students have won top honors at the monthly JSE Investment Challenge which aims to teach South African learners and students about investing.

Katlego Masete, actuarial science student, and Ntiyiso Nghenabo, chartered accountancy student, are in their third year of study at UCT. The duo won the monthly speculators portfolio in the academic category.

The couple, whose team name is “Limpopo Goes to the Market”, clearly demonstrate their affinity with their home province, and say that university life has presented them with many new challenges.

They believe their success in high school, college, and the JSE Investment Challenge is a result of both of them being hard workers and having big dreams. Although Masete and Nghenabo come from humble beginnings, they firmly believe that they are destined for bigger things.

During his bachelor’s year, Masete obtained six distinctions and obtained 100% in mathematics and physics; while Nghenabo’s grades were equally impressive with five accolades. Nghenabo says they were drawn to each other because they share a similar work ethic.

As for their success in the Investment Challenge competition, they believe that the technical orientation of their studies has been useful to them in analyzing trends.

“The investment challenge aims to equip the youth of South Africa with a financial literacy and investment know-how. We want to make sure that when learners and students leave education, they understand how to use their disposable income and develop healthy saving and investing habits, ”says Ralph Speirs, CSI Manager at JSE.

The winners of the June 2021 competition are also:

  • Income Portfolio – Mpumelelo High School (MP Magic Traders).
  • Equity portfolio – High School Center of Excellence (Element X).
  • Portfolio of speculators – Crawford College, Sandton (The Capitalists).

Registrations for the 2021 Investment Challenge are still open and interested learners and students can still participate in the competition. To register for the challenge, visit the JSE Investment Challenge website.
